Out of this experience springs the body movement that naturally expressed the emotions and energy of the song

Gospel 101

Gospel 101 is a one day introduction to gospel music. Imagine how exhilarated you’ll feel at the end of a day having learned several new gospel pieces as well as insights into the spirit of gospel music, including total body expression-- moving naturally and feeling comfortable doing so?! Chris has worked with all ages and ability levels including teen groups and confirmation groups using music as a tool for spiritual growth.

Advanced Gospel Workshop

Advanced Gospel Workshop usually runs from three to five days culminating in a performance or service as the goal, with a focus on concert-ready results.

A typical workshop:

Materials (CD and music) are sent for singers and musicians to prepare as much as possible before the week of the workshop.

    Wednesday night 7:00-10:00 choir workshopß
  • Thursday night 7:00-10:00 band rehearsal
  • Friday night 7:00-10:00 choir workshop
  • Saturday 12:00-4:00 combined choir and band rehearsal (one performance possible on Saturday night at one location if multiple churches are involved)

Soloists and special one-on-one sessions also available
Sunday morning performance during church service
Sunday evening: Gospel Concert!

In a typical workshop, your group will learn approximately six songs with band, choir and soloists. Chris will oversee all aspects of rehearsal and performance.

Chris is also a master musician and a jazz piano teacher, as well as a music director who has the gift of teaching the band how to stylistically play gospel music. One-on-one sessions are available as time permits to work with the soloists, musicians and even songwriters.

Often churches combine to pool talents, defray costs and put on a combined concert. Bigger is better!

The Method

Gospel singing is a great way to open up out of your shell and really find freedom, passion and power. Chris is an amazing teacher and you won’t realize how much you are learning because you will be having so much fun! Aspects of the style such as melisma, modifying vowels, rhythms, following a gospel director, listening to a chord and finding your note will all be covered while in the context of rehearsals. Most people are surprised what Chris is able to pull out of them. He will have you clapping, singing, moving and expressing from your heart at the top of your lungs. For more advanced singers he can challenge them with different vocal techniques such ping, forward sound, going between a blended breathy sound and a belt voice for effect, and of course, riffing.

The workshop is based largely on original repertoire. Chris is a prolific composer and with four gospel CDs to his name and is actively pursuing his own gospel career (please see his site at www.cooganmusic.com for further information).

If you are close enough geographically, Chris can bring his group The Good News Gospel Choir, or, if you desire, he can bring soloists and musicians to your area for an added expense. The choir recently celebrated their new CD, Everday I Wanna Praise You-- please feel free to listen to cuts off the CD at http://chriscoogangospel.com/music.htm.

All workshops are custom-tailored to your personal needs, budget, schedule and considerations.
